Transforming a Campus into an Extension of the Learning Experience
Challenge
When Key School relocated to the newly renovated John M. Richardson Campus, the opportunity extended far beyond updating the physical environment. The school wanted the new space to reflect its mission, celebrate its history, and create an engaging experience that would inspire students throughout their daily journey.
The challenge was to develop a cohesive environmental graphics program that could bring energy, personality, and purpose to the campus while remaining true to the school’s brand and educational philosophy.
Strategy
Rather than treating the graphics as decoration, I approached the project as an extension of the student experience.
Every touchpoint within the building was viewed as an opportunity to reinforce Key School’s mission of empowering students with language-based learning differences. The visual system needed to create moments of inspiration, encourage exploration, and foster a sense of belonging while remaining functional and easy to navigate.
Drawing inspiration from the school’s rich history dating back to 1966, the strategy focused on blending vibrant visuals, encouraging messaging, and dynamic compositions to create an environment that felt both educational and uplifting.
Execution
Working closely with school leadership, I translated the Key School brand into a comprehensive environmental graphics system spanning multiple areas throughout the campus.
Key components included:
Media Wall
Designed as a visual centerpiece, the media wall celebrates the school’s identity and legacy while creating an impactful first impression for students, faculty, and visitors.
Pillar Graphics
Structural elements throughout the building were transformed into storytelling opportunities that reinforce key messages and create visual continuity throughout the campus.
Hallways & Ceiling Flags
Dynamic graphics and suspended visual elements were introduced to create movement, energy, and moments of discovery as students move through the space.
Library Environment
The library was designed to inspire curiosity, learning, and exploration through welcoming graphics that support the educational mission while creating a vibrant destination within the school.
Throughout the project, careful attention was given to balancing playful creativity with visual clarity, ensuring the environment remained engaging without becoming overwhelming.
Results
The completed installation transformed the campus into an immersive brand experience that supports both learning and community.
The environmental graphics program:
- Created a cohesive visual identity throughout the campus
- Reinforced Key School’s educational mission and values
- Enhanced student engagement through inspiring and interactive spaces
- Improved the overall campus experience for students, faculty, and visitors
- Established a vibrant and memorable environment that reflects the school’s commitment to empowering learners
More than a collection of graphics, the project helped turn the campus itself into a teaching tool—one that celebrates curiosity, encourages confidence, and supports students every day as they learn, grow, and thrive.
